Day 1
I hope that it is helping that I have journaled here publically. I hope to show that fasting isn’t as scary as you might fear. I am cc-ing this in an online forum, and I am getting several questions about how I feel, and how this process works. Each day I will detail my progress toward my fasting goals, as well as try to answer the questions I’ve gotten about fasting.
A question came up from someone reading about how to break a fast. There are lots of different expert opinions out there. Most writers have suggested that you slowly need to increase the acid in your stomach so you can accept food again. For example on the master cleanse you break with orange juice, which will help rebalance the pH in your belly. Then move on to fruits and vegetables. But again, that suggestion comes following 10 days of lemonade, which is very alkalizing, so you see why the acid is needed. Most recommend mild foods, and things which aren’t straining on the digestive organs. Again, a great resource is the Bragg fasting book. I pulled mine out last night! He states that a good cabbage saled is the best way to break a fast. He also talks about making a big pot of steamed greens, and I have both in the house right now. When I get to the end of this fast, I will probably try his method. I think I wrote once that my hubby broke a 10 day fast with a deli sandwhich! Can you believe it? He claims it went down fine. A neighbor brought it to him, and he didn’t have the heart to send the older man away. I’m figuring that part of his success was the ‘good intention’ he had in not wanting to offend the man, which in the end is all that really matters I suppose!
Well…almost 24 hours into the fast and I’m feeling ok. I will admit that the tonsil issue was of great concern, as I was beginning to wonder if it was less that the irritation in my throat was from that dental injury, and more that my immune system needed a bootkick into shape, as a sore tonsil seems to preceed virus infection in my body. (I’ve noted that over the years…I think I must have a weakness there.)
So, I woke up feeling tired, and achy, that’s before I even started the fast, so I knew it WAS definately a good time to begin, as fasting is a great way to let your body relax so it can focus it’s metabolic energy on healing, rather than digestion. Juice fasting makes it easier as well, as you get enough calories so you don’t have to go on pure physiological rest. (stay in bed all day!)
So goal number one, address tonsil - working well. the area feels more moisturized due to all the liquids.
Goal two - clear the mind. Well, I’ll get there. Ended up leaving work early as I was definately getting body aches from this virus. I’d love to imagine it as detox, but I know better. That usually comes day 3 or so for me. I’m spending time practicing breathing right now, and that is helping a lot for the ‘centering’ of the mind.
Goal three- No chocolate cravings whatsoever. So one goal reached!
So far today I have had about 6 glasses of limeade (homemade) as well as fresh fruit juice. (non acid) No hunger at all. I slept a good portion of the afternoon when I came home from work. I do feel a sinus headache pretty strong right now, which may be detox, but more likely the virus. I’m already, however, feeling like I am in the driver’s seat, and this bug won’t get me.
