Cleansing for Mucus & Mucusless Diets

Mucus is an interesting thing…actually…It is not so much the mucus that is bad, as I understand it, but rather, the culprit is actually what causes the response mucus making response in our body. Our body produces mucus for a reason. And, by the way, the book “The Mucusless Diet” is very facinating. Others who wrote about this subject were Dr. Christopher, (the herbalist) as well as Paul Bragg. I am sure there are many others, but those are who come to mind.

Bear in mind, mucus is something that our body makes to protect itself…For instance, in our digestive tract / ie stomach for instance, the mucus lining protects our stomach cells themselves, from being digested by the harsh acid of the stomach contents, acid that they themselves make. In the colon, mucus in the mucosa (intestinal lining) helps keep the semi permiable lining, exactly that, semi permiable. Without some layer of protection, gastric juice, bile salts, pancreatic enzymes, parasites, probiotics, etc, would eat through our tissues.

However, when mucus become “bad” is when there is too much, too little, or all around too “mucky” of mucus in our bodies. Here is an example, there are many foods that increase mucus production in a negative way. Refined “white” foods like wheat gluten, and dairy are notorious for this. They thicken the mucus in our colon, which binds and glues our stool, causing constipation and other nasty things. Bacterial infections are another reason our body produces mucus. When we have a “sensitive” or allergic reaction to something, our body makes mucus.

Mucus is sticky, and holds on to junk that it comes in contact with…Mucus is there to protect us, so our body’s immune system is at work, trying hard to make more mucus, which will protect the cells, as well as help bind up bacteria, and keep it out of our bloodstream. We looked at some rather gross pics of ecoli in mucus in one of our seminars at work. It is pretty knarley…but, it is our body’s immune system at work.

When people talk about mucusless diets, they are refering to diets which reduce the inflammatory response, the gluey like formations in our stool, and the excess mucus in our sinus and other organs. Such diets are quite healthy actually, and are optimal while cleansing. Generally speaking, the high-raw diet would be considered a low mucus forming diet.
