Total Body Cleansing

Here is my 2 cents on cleansing…back in the days of Bernard Jenson’s “tissue cleansing through bowel management” (his book) the industry learned of cleansing toxins thru the use of colonics and enemas, as well as proper diet and exercise. A few decades ago, a supplement company along with several promenant herbalists introduced the idea of doing a “total body” cleanse. Meaning, that when we cleanse toxins, we need to cleanse all our organs of elimination: the liver lungs lymph kidney skin blood & bowel. Nowadays, that is considered industry standard.

Meaning, when you go to a HFS to buy a cleanse, you are probably buying something that not only addresses your colon, but your whole body…Imagine, your liver is the hardest working organ of detox, it probably needs help too. And, most of us have lots of stored toxins in fat cells, as well as our weakened areas…this happens when they escape the colon into our bloodstream due to “a leaky gut.” Jensen was right, only they are finding there is more to it. I love his books, and in fact I practice many of his philosophies. Only now I see the rest of my body and how it relates back to a weak colon.

THerefore, if someone is doing a cleanse, I recommend doing something that addresses the whole body. I am of course biased to my company, but that is because we are packed in vege caps, and use no binders or fillers. (known for being the cleanest on the market…) I suggest that people ask around for CleanseSmart First Cleanse, since it is designed for first time cleansers, and it is also milder, Organic, and contains no magnesium or cascara. This type of product provides herbs for all 7 channels of elimination, and will shake out the toxins and send them to the colon for ellimination. (the buckthorn and rubarb will help move the bowels.) THen, by taking the flax fiber your toxins will be happily on thier way.

If you just want to do a plain colon cleanse, taking flax will help. Practitioners often suggest the flax “tea” for pregnant moms, children and ladies who are breast feeding. It is totally safe, and is nutritional as well. I often hear it used for parents to give thier children when they were being treated for parasites with herbs, because it is a mild and safe laxative. Flax tea or gel is made by steeping a few table spoons of the seeds in warm water.. Let sit untill it gels. THis is the same gel that holds your flax crackers together, and is often used by vegans as an egg replacer in recipes that need a liquid binder….

Now, some folks have asked me if I have done an unsupervised juice fast…I have done the master cleanse several times. My parents do this 3-4 times a year for 10+ days at a time. Like I’ve mentioned before, I don’t really consider the Master Cleanse or Juice Fasting as True fasting. The two provide much more in terms of nutrients and calories than a standard water fast. So, personally, I would have no fear in undertaking them without supervision. I can and have….In my opinion, however, as an NC I would always suggest that any fasting should be done with supervision. The extreme-ness warrents that. Short fasts of a day might be different, and each individual must make thier own decisions. But I am not a doctor, and I think that knowing your own limitations is really important!

When I do the Master Cleanse, instead of the senna tea and salt water oral enema, I have taken several things. One is Cleanse Smart, and the other is Cleanse More, two products by my company. The CleanseSmart I mentioned earlier, and the CleanseMore is simply the bowel cleanser or laxative portion of the kit that we sell seperately. I suppose that is unconventional in terms of what Stanley Burroughs speaks of in his book, but then he was against colonic irrigation, and I have practiced that as well….
In terms of what you FIND when you cleanse, well, working for a digestive care company, we deal with such concerns and comments on an everyday basis. In fact, some of our customers even send “samples!” of what they find… (I am serious, we deal a lot with people doing parasite cleanses, so you can only imagine.)
With regard to senna, it is a pretty powerful herb. Personaly, I wouldn’t touch it, as it is an extreem irritant to the bowel, and can even cause staining to the colon which can cause a false negative when recieving a colonoscopy and cancer screening. There are several other herbs of choice, the harsher being Aloe and Cascara, and the milder being buckthorn or turkey rubarb. Others use minerals for this purpose. Magnesium is popular.

My boss, ( the founder of Renew Life Formulas,) Brenda Watson, is a colon hydrotherapist, and the head of the national association of colon therapists. She recommends flax over all other types of fiber, since it is such a perfect blend of soluable and insoluable fiber. Our company has a flax fiber blend, but I highly recommend ground flax to anyone with constipation. ( We maintain that constipation means anything less than the number of BM corresponding to your number of large meals….) My first few months raw I struggled with this issue. This issue is more common that one would imagine.

Anyway, a combination of flax fiber and a dose of essential fatty acids really does help keep one regular. Some people who don’t want the fiber, but just the mucilagenous laxative effect from the flax will take warm water and “steep the flax” to make a gel and drink that in a smoothie after straining the seeds. You get the EFAs this way too. If you or anyone else has any more questions on this I can answer them if you would like.

Another good use for fiber is to absorb toxins. This is often the reason why vegetarians have less colon cancer incidents…the fiber not only keeps one regular, but it absorbs the toxins dropped into the colon by the liver and kidney, and “escorts” them out in a BM…

Cassy
