A portion of my PCOS story (Raw diet & hormone balancing)
Back in the days, a fellow memeber of the RawFoodTalk forum and I were chatting about the benefits the Raw diet can have for those who suffer from PCOS. I had told her I would be posting my PCOS experience in my journal, which I did, and you can read it on the entry for that day January 27th 2005.
I wrote a pretty long entry that day, going over “in brief” (lol) what my experience has been with PCOS itself since puberty when it manifested. I thought I would include a snippet here which goes over the key connections to Raw and how & why I found my way onto this path… For those who have PCOS, they are probably quite familar with some of its symtoms. Fortunately, not everyone has every one of the symtoms, as they are NOT enjoyable to say the least…infertility, weight gain, prediabetic conditions, hair loss, thick hairs in non normal places, such as face and arms, ovarian cysts, irregular periods, emotional issues, depression, etc…
In 2003 I had a scare with my period. I saw spotting, two weeks after I had already had my meses. I knew it wasn’t right. I immediately thought of doing a detox. I read online a little about living foods, and then read Shazzies site. I was hooked. This was for me.
I started out immediately, and realized that it was easy. Within 4 months, I discovered that my fibroids had “disappeared”. I had some that were unconfortable in my ‘girly’ parts, and they were no longer there! Excess weight 30 lbs of it had melted away. My period has come like clockwork every month since then. (Except for a short time last year when I let my diet slip.)
My skin is incredibly clear. I hardly wear makeup at all anymore except for a bit of minerals. I have few scars from those old days, and I have learned to love the sun, and walking, and as long as I am eating well, I no longer suffer from PMS. I chalk this all up to raw. It was the icing on the cake. My high raw diet gives my body the enzymes it needs to digest the foods I eat, and so my pancreas can spend its time in metabolic activity. The enzymes it pumps out can be used to heal me! Raw has brought me to where I am now.
I did a quick search on PCOS to see if I could find some links about the link between blood sugar & PCOS. Many people, such as myself thought it was an ovary issue only. I also looked for links that spoke of success using the raw diet. I found the following:
http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com/bl…gar-news6.html
(discusses the reasons to not compartmentalize PCOS as an ovarian issue.)
http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com/PCOS-success.html
(Has a list of several success stories, and several mention the idea of detoxification.)

(This article reference Karen K of the UK’s raw Fresh Network & her precancerous cervix.)
Anyway, I hope this will stimulate conversation!
Meanwhile, if it is any consolation, it is my belief that it was the raw diet (in conjunction with some pretty serious cleansing and fasting that I first adopted in 2003 that allowed my fibroids (another symtom of this condition) to shrink away, and the major symtoms of my PCOS to decline. I have remained high raw, with long periods of 100% since the spring of 2003. WHen I revert to old poor food habits or fail to exercise regularly, my periods become more painful, and irregular, and wieght comes back on my belly, which is a sign of the symptoms of the disorder returning.
So, I for one can say with certainty that a high raw, and yet low glycemic diet had been extremely helpful. (Diet and lifestyle modification has been shown beneficial in studies, so I know I’m on the right track. Check out some of the studies if you want, as I have included a few abstracts on my website.) Also helpful has been the periods of fasting which I’ve done to help my body cleanse and detoxify excessive xenoestrogens. (See the medical letter written by John Lee, MD. that I have listed on my subpages in the right column.) Keeping contact with a good practitioner who can help you monitor the condition is also a good idea. That way you can tell what is working. I love my acupuncturist. She’s helped me see that what I am doing IS successful, validating my hard work!
I will be adding a link to my PCOS eBook to this page in the future. In the meantime, feel free to review the articles I’ve written, and check out the blog entry I mention above.
